Mr. Matchett will be your teacher, so I can be at a convention. It's a science competition, scientists compete against a set deadline with lots of rules. If they win, their project is paid for! SO cool!

Can a launched missile take out an asteroid?
There are scientists working to develop technology to intercept asteroids. However, to take out an asteroid, a missile really needs to impact (hit) it directly. Because asteroids are really piles of porous rubble and contain numerous pieces (not just one), it would be nearly impossible to take out with a single direct hit. And, even given a direct hit, the force may only nudge the asteroid a tiny bit, which would require significant advance knowledge that it was on a collusion course.
*My two cents? Seems like a long shot to me.
Greg’s answer: Very complicated. If a missile were to hit an asteroid, just because it breaks it up doesn't mean the pieces will change their orbit (the direction at which they travel)- they still come at us. Also, a missile hit might not break it up well. Asteroids are big! How big of a missile can we send?
At this time, scenarios computer simulations for deflecting (changing the direction) an asteroid involves:

At this time, scenarios computer simulations for deflecting (changing the direction) an asteroid involves:
- Knowing about an asteroid about it 5 or more years before we know it may hit Earth
- Sending something up (an rocket motor, whatever) to just change the asteroid’s path away from Earth.
- If an asteroid was on a path toward Earth, all it takes really is a mild nudge (move it), but how do we do that? *More information and research is needed.

Yay!
SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft attached successfully* to the International Space Station at approximately this morning-8:56 a.m. EST Sunday. Dragon arrived to station with over 2,300 pounds of cargo and packaging to ensure safe travel, and during the next 22 days, astronauts will unload and then load cargo, including materials to support important science experiments. Dragon will return to Earth with over 3,000 pounds of cargo, and has a targeted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja, Calif. on March 25. Dragon is the only spacecraft in the world today capable of returning large amounts of cargo to Earth. Read more: https://spacex.com/updates.php

Live Rocket Launch Today!
The private spaceflight company SpaceX is the first EVER to build and launch its own rockets and space capsules to the International Space Station and RETURN them to Earth. SpaceX's unmanned Dragon space capsules launch on the company's Falcon 9 rockets and first flew to the International Space Station in 2012. The Calif.-based company is planning to upgrade Dragon capsules to launch seven people into orbit in upcoming years, but there's more to SpaceX than meets the eye.
So, to answer many of your questions today, NO there were not people inside the rocket today. The problem they had was a minor computer issue. The solar panels would not open so the engine, which needs energy from the solar panels would not function/work either. All they had to do was tell the panels to open via computer on Earth and it began to function as planned. Dragon, will not attach to the ISS as planned however, just in case its engines fail again. After all, we have to protect the ISS because there ARE people on that not to mention years of innovation-still in progress. :-)
